Randy, <I have an Amiga 3000 and was wondering what it would take to get a decent modem at a good price that worked in the Amiga, and what software could be used to get to Compuserve/Internet.> Just about any external modem can be hooked up to the Amiga. The cables we user are the same as on the clones, so that's not a problem either. The most recommended brands of modems are USR and Practical Peripherals. There are others that will work well also, but I'd beware of the really cheap ones as they tend to have more problems than they're worth. I've been running on a Supra 14.4 FAXmodem for a couple of years now and it's a darn good little machine. You might want to download IINST151.LHA from the AmigaUser libraries. It will tell you the software you'll need to get your Amiga from CIS to the Internet and it will install it for you too!
