Indeed, the Windows '9X will allow you to switch to different modes without resetting, however, I know of several VGA card manufacturers that include drivers that will do the same. In fact, Binar Graphics has a DLL utility that will allow you to switch modes without resetting for a number of VGA cards. Can't quiet remember what the name of the program is off the top of my head. MM100 will work in the 640×480, 8-bit mode. The software will have the capability to switch to other modes, but we want to avoid this because undesirable effects occur on the display monitor (i.e. blanking until new mode is stable). Most of the external VGA to Composite converters universally support the 640×480, 8-bit mode. And for that matter, the Scala wipes will perform best in this mode. Most middle to high-end laptops/notebooks have a 1MB SVGA display built-in. Some also include localbus circuitry that will increase performance. In some cases, low-end laptops/notebooks with 512KB VGA displays will suffice, but is not ideal.
