Well Loren, I'd say you're out of luck. No, you can't map the image and have
3DS resize it. I mean it would work but it will still look bad. It would be the
same as resizing it in Photoshop or anything else. 3DS will typically make a
resize look nicer than photoshop but not enough to compensate for what you're
doing.
Although I don't know much about it, and have never tried it, there is software
available that's supposed to accomplish very nice resizing using fractal
techniques. You may want to contact Iterated Systems about it. Or maybe someone
else will have more info.
When you're doing stuff for print keep the following in mind: You always want
to produce work at the intended output resolution. LPI is normally 1/2 of the
required DPI. So, if you want to print an image using a 133 line screen at 4×5
inches – you would need to supply an image that was 1064×1330 pixels. Your
printer should be able to tell you the exact formula. Otherwise you could have
someone recreate the image, depending on what it was, at the required
resolution.
