We've been dealing with this problem for a long time and we've determined that when you merge a project or .3ds file or a piece of one with the animation button on, ALL of the dummies from the source file are also merged into the destination file, even if there is already a dummy (or dummies) of the same name. So if you're doing a lot of merging, it's easy to accumulate a huge list of identical dummies. I thought this was an undocumented feature….
