James: 4 MB of RAM is no doubt your problem. For what I do 32MB is a practical minimum. However, I have gotten 3DS to function on 8MB on a laptop but I did not use any bitmapped materials or cast any shadows. With so little RAM your machines would swap almost immediately to the hard disks if you got them rendering at all. You've mentioned that they only have 8-10 MB free hard disk space which is very little also. As soon as this swap space is used up your machines will hang. If you have any machines available that have more RAM and disk space you can get a good idea of the resources you will need on your slaves by checking the stats at the bottom of the render screen. The stats will tell you the amount of RAM used and the amount of swap space used as well. – Bob Ritger
