I complained at Cserve last night about not supporting the AMIGA. No doubt you've heard that terminal emulation is obsolete at CompuServe. This is sometimes phrased as ASCII IS DEAD. These statements have been taken out of context and have caused some confusion. Let me clarify what "ASCII is dead" means:terminal emulation has become very undesirable in the context of most of the information services. Most command driven users interfaces are non-intuitive, suffer from lack of uniformity, and are just generally viewed as uncool by many. But command driven (ASCII) interfaces are compact and efficient once you learn a specific interface, so we are NOT making a religious effort to eliminate them from our systems. Our top development priority at CompuServe is to create new and better easy to use products and services for our customers. This means that no NEW CIS ASCII applications will be developed. Gateway products will be HMI, or viewed through an HMI converter. (HMI or it's successor), and new CIS applications will be HMI only (e.g., 32-bit Forums) ASCII users will see a decreasing percentage of CIS, and WOW will not support any ascii applications. WINCIM's terminal emulation is supported, and will be for the foreseeable future. We have enabled others access to our HMI protokoll and toolbox, so that they can create tools for all kinds of platforms and systems that interface with the CompuServe Information Service. Many of the third party offline readers are currently in the process of changing their products to interface CompuServe via the HMI protokoll. Thank you for your interest in CompuServe.
