Peter, Sometimes there are network problems that knock you off the system, even local telephone problems will do that. That's why the unexpected NO CARRIER. CIS does have an idle timeout where if you haven't entered a keystroke for 20 minutes it will presume there's been some problem and hang up on you…which will also lead to a NO CARRIER message. The idle timelimit doesn't work in all areas…for example, it is no active while doing an upload or download. But in any event, if you leave CIS "abnormally" that is…via a hang up, rather than a log off, all your pointers get left as they were when you logged on to a particular forum. Again, let's say you were here in the Amiga forum. You are reading messages and the line gets hung up. Then your high message pointer won't be reset…and it will look as if you've not been here that day. High message pointers get set when you leave a forum's message base legally (no hang up). Going to a library or to one of the conference rooms will re-set you high message pointer. But hanging up, while in the message base (whether on purpose or by accident) will not set your message pointer to your new high message, it will leave it alone…so the next time you come in, it will look as if you haven't read the messages from the last time you were in.
