If you're having problems with the configuration part, something's wrong! You
have a couple of options. Make sure your "clean config and autoexec" is really
clean. Some folks don't realize that clean should be: CONFIG.SYS – files=40.
For the AUTOEXEC.BAT: prompt, path, mouse.
It's possible that even the mouse can be a problem, so don't hesitate to
eliminate that.
Run CHKDSK /F on your 3DS drive. Also run it on your swapdrive if you've
assigned that to another drive. (Well, go ahead and run CHKDSK /F on all your
drives!) You might find that a report of Lost Allocation Units can be the
culprit. If you have some, it might even be necessary to reinstall 3DS again,
if the problem doesn't go away.
If you've already done this, I'd consider running your computer's setup disk
and disabling cacheing, or any advanced features temporarily while you do these
tests. It could be a hardware situation if you can copy 3DS to another machine
and find that it works.
