Getting "locked into" the software is a factor in IBM's success with the large
corporations, but their instinct for what we used to call "office politics" has
a lot to do with it. Anyone who has worked for a really big company can tell
you that people who know how to "suck up" to the boss sometimes get promoted
before people with better qualifications – and that the company with the best
hardware and software doesn't always get the contract.
I don't have much respect for IBM's philosophy – and certainly wasn't defending
them! Vic Wagner seemed to be suggesting that Commodore is regarded as a
business computer company in Europe because they have the words "Business
Machines" in their name. He probably didn't mean it that way, but it struck me
as comical, and I couldn't resist.
