The C= chip designers did a great job maintaining compatibility between
the enhanced chip set and the current one. All the current amiga modes
behave the same with the new chips and are deinterlaced by the flicker
fixer.
The new mode (640 x 400, non-interlace, 4 colors out of 64) can be used
with an appropriate monitor attached to the 23 pin video connector. While
the new mode is in use, the flicker fixer does not operate. The board does
not need to be removed.
The new mode is similar to the flicker fixer deinterlacing a two bitplane
screen. The differences are that the flickerfixed screen can use the normal
4096 color palette and does not use additional chip memory bandwidth. The
bandwidth difference will be significant on the workbench screen. I expect
that screens operating in the new mode will not slide.
Both the new mode and flicker fixer require monitors that can handle 31.5
KHz horizontal. Any monitor which can use the new mode should be able to
operate with flicker fixer. Since flicker fixer converts all modes to the
higher scan rate, it can be used with VGA single-frequency monitors. These
monitors would not be a good choice for use with the ECS since all modes
other than the non-interlace one will run at 15.75 KHz. Peter.
