Assuming that you want to create high-quality PostScript fonts, the only reasonable way (presently available to those outside Adobe) is to use Fontographer from Altsys. It is a good product, designed expressly to help you build a consistent look for your entire character set. The folks at Altsys are supposed to be releasing a program that will allow Adobe Illustrator88 images to be built into fonts, so if you prefer to work with Illustrator88 this may provide a good alternative. Many artists and calligraphers understandably prefer to work on paper first and transfer their images to the computer. Illustrator88 (and I believe Fontographer as well) allows you to use a scanned image as a template. The "auto-trace" facility of Illustrator88 sounds better than it is in real life, at least for this type of work. But the use of a template will be very useful to you. By the way, are you the Chris Browne that does "Cruiser" in Playboy? If so, I've enjoyed your work and your humor for some time.
