What I paid for the printer and what it retails for are 2 different things! It retails for $795. There is a color option for it (I didn't get it so I don't know the cost — under $150, tho). If you get the PaintJet, do realize that it will give you great color pics, but the text output (at 180 dpi) won't be as good as a good 24 pin dot matrix. Alps had the ALQ-200 series. You could get it with either an 18 pin head (ALQ-218) or the 24 pin head (ALQ-224). So, if someone told you specifically that the ALQ-218 was a 24 pin printer they either didn't know what they were talking about or they stretched the truth. It _can_ be a 24 pin printer if you spend an extra $100 to get the 24 pin print head — but then the printer becomes the ALQ-224. At any rate, the ALQ-224 is discontinued and replaced by the ALQ-224e.
