Illustrator will identify and use PICT files as templates, but PICT
files seem to use a LOT more memory (RAM) than MacPaint files…enough to
cause frequent "out of memory" situations on a Mac Plus with a single meg
of RAM.
The best way I've found to incorporate scanned images is to save them as an
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file, then use the "Place" command (in the
file menu). This will place a rectangular object on your illustrator
screen, which you can slant/distort/scale etc, and can see in preview
mode. If your scanner software doesn't save in the EPS format, you might
consider using some image retouching software like ImageStudio.
