#Color Splitter
I have borrowed my friend's Color Splitter by Sunrize, and as promised, here
is a quick report based on two hours use with Digi-View and my camcorder:
The unit consists of a small beige box that hooks up between your video
source and digitizer. The front panel features knobs for saturation and hue
and a 3-way toggle switch for R, G, and B. The back has RCA type jacks for
video-in, video-out and one labled 'L' (for luminance, I guess). This one can
be used either for output to a composite monitor, or in combination with the
video-in jack, as an SVHS connector. Also on the back panel is a 9-pin
connector for Perfect Vision users which, when connected with PV, automates the
RGB toggling process.
The unit worked well with my camcorder and D-V, eliminating the cumbersome
color wheel. The rub, of course, is that it must have a color signal to begin
with. Those who use D-V with high resolution B/W cameras will find the unit
worthless. Perfect Vision users might be disappointed in the fact that it must
be used with a still image, such as a vcr still-frame.
I was pleased with the results I got using the camcorder, D-V and the Color
Splitter. In the short time I've had to play with it I have achieved better
results than with the color wheel. I attribute this mostly to the fact that
the color wheel filters cut the light level considerably, while the Color
Splitter does not. It apears to let you digitize with less light. I would
love to try it with a high resolution color video camera!
