Scott– I'd forgotten about that as well. ANSI.SYS will, among other
things, set the video mode, but that's not what I want. Actually, I'm
trying to PREVENT the mode from changing. Brief wants to change my video
mode for me back to something it thinks is even better than what I had
set.
Before I start the editor, I set the video mode to 42– 132×43-using VRAM's
ESU utility. Then, I start Brief, telling it it has a larger screen to play
with. This works on an Everex EVGA, but it didn't work with the VRAM.
Snooping around, I found out that VRAM video BIOS is telling everyone that
it's in mode 1 (40×25), which is itself a lie. Brief apparently didn't like
what it saw and tried to second guess me.
Changing the mode NUMBER, not the MODE itself, is enough to let Brief
startup without mucking things. It works, I'm happy, and I still don't have
the file to upload. If anyone else is having a similar problem, let me
know. This may cure it for you.
