James, I think that the changing marketing strategy may have something
to do with the everchanging leadership in CBM USA. Currently they've got
two targets: multimedia and home-computer/toy. They will also have to be
competing in the Unix and home-electronics/CDTV markets soon as well, which
is enough to make marketdroids lose their mind!
If you'd seen Lotus Improv you might not feel that porting is so bad.
One example of how Lotus is so well organized. Columns and rows are not
numbered, they are named. You can also group columns and rows such as:
Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Quarter 3…… product 1
prod 2 prod 1 prod 2 prod 1 prod 2
There will be two little buttons along the top labeled quarter and
product. If you drag the product button down to the vertical axis, it will
automatically restructure the entire spreadsheet to show quarter1, 2, 3
across the top and product 1 and product 2 along the y axis.
It is VERY intuitive. Also, the formulas are kept in a 'window' and are
phrased as words. You can be sure this'll be ported to many other
platforms.
BTW, Commodore had an excellent quarter 7/1-9/30. Sales of Amigas were
up by 50 PERCENT in terms of unit sales. The A3000 must've taken off.
Earnings were 7 million.
