Dom, It's usually possible to back-up the files from a partition even though it hasn't been validated. Unfortunately, I've had to do this several times in the last couple of months. Actually, it's a good thing that the validation doesn't succeed, since it locks the drive into read-only mode. Good to back up, but not for anything else. Lacking something like QB Tools, my only option was to backup-reformat-restore. This works well, although it'a bit of a pain. You're correct when you say that QB is a backup/restore program and won't FIX the problem. It can be applied to SOLVE the problem, though. Probably the best method is to (1) backup, (2) attempt to fix with QB tools, (3) if the problem can't be repaired with QB tools, then reformat & restore. David
