Harry,
You inquired about the Delaware society. I have heard of it but I can't tell
you about its activities. I am active in the Delaware Valley Earth Science
Society, which meets in Woodbury, NJ, and does most of its collecting in SE
Pennsylvania and NJ. The Mineralogical Society of PA, which meets on the West
Chester Univ. campus, in West Chester, PA, also does some field collecting in
SE PA, as does the Friends of Mineralogy, PA Chapter.
With the DVESS, I have collected at the old Ecton Mines, in Lower
Providence, PA, for copper, zinc, lead minerals; at the Wheatley Lode, in
Phoenixville, for pyromorphite and wulfenite, and at other localities in the
area. Recently, the MSP organized a collecting trip to the Kibblehouse Q., in
Perkiomenville, PA, for its well known zeolites. So, there's a lot of
organized collecting at some highly productive sites. IF you have access to an
April issue of the Lapidary Journal, it will give you contact people for all
the local mineral clubs and societies.
Good Luck!
Nathan
