Gary,
I've used a Telebit T1000 at work and would have no hesitation in
recommending it. It will do 9600 baud, but not do anything faster, like an
HST mode. It's the only modem I've ever worked with that works reliably
when I have to call Ottawa, Ontario from Los Angeles. I _think_ that they
can be found for around $600 or so.
