Mike,
Sounds like a 'classic' case of having too high a MaxTransfer value
(or no MaxTransfer value) in your mountlist or equivalent on-disk
information.
Try cutting it in half if you have a value there, if not, try
setting it at about 128K (131072) and see what happens.
