To get optimal results from Object Blur, you've got to experiment with the various settings (esp Samples) until it's completely unnoticable while the object is moving. The point of Object Blur is NOT to make things look blurry… it's strictly another form of antialiasing — but temporal instead of spatial. If you want a blurry trail, use the Scene Motion Blur feature in Video Post (it does exactly what you described), and if you want the best of both worlds, you can combine them together. – G
