Were the departing fathers also stepping out on gainful employment? The emotions experienced by these men at not having jobs with which they could support a family probably played a greater role in their decision to leave than a calculation of increased welfare for the remaining spouse. To the extent it did, then the calculation was at fault, not the concept of income support for single mothers. Gary
