Hi, Tony– Different frequencies and types of quake waves have different characteristics in terms of whether they focus at ridges, liquefy ground, shake buildings horizontally or vertically, and so on. Each quake has its own combination of these wave types and surrounding terrain, and so the experts keep getting confounded until all the combinations have been seen closely. Even then you cannot be sure which combination will come up – it will always be a matter of where the best odds are, I suspect. –Doug
