The speed of sound is several thousand feet per second in water. It's more than 16,000 feet per second in solid steel. Waves are waves are waves. Some of them express as sound, some of them express as light, some express all many spectra and are tangible in different ways. Low-frequency vibrations travel ENORMOUS distances. Ask the people in the southwest who hear the BUZZ and are determined to find it where it's coming from! But anyhow, in terms of sound waves and their speed and their efficacy over distance, it does seem like the "medium is the message." And so I don't find it weird at all to think that as crackled as the southern California landform is, that its very nonuniformity would have immense impact on how far/well wave forms travelled. They have to have a medium to travel in!! God, am I glad I wasn't around for the New Madrid one. It rang bells in Boston!!?!? I never heard that, but what a thought! Meanwhile, I did hear that one witness to this quake said that the earth was rolling with an amplitude of 30 vertical feet in the valleys! Oh, my. Must go!
