John: Since you mention you have a Mac, I wonder if Adobe Photoshop 2.0
would handle some of these images. If you can get some conversion to
something that it can import, I believe that it should be able to do some
of the things you want (just from reputation of the program, not first hand
knowledge of 2.0; I've got 1.2 which does a lot as well). Photoshop 2.0 may
really strain your hardware capabilities, however, with some of its
functions only optimal in very high ram machines (32 meg+, in real or
virtual ram). …phil
