I have been doing monochrome scanning (and OCR) with the Golden Image hand scanner and Migraph TouchUp, and color with a video camera and DCTV (quality not so great for DTP, but a fast way to take pictures and publish them). I am considering getting the Epson flatbed scanner (ES-300C) with the ASDG driver package (advertised for about $1100). I am wondering: 1) Does the Epson scanner do 24-bit color at 600 dpi? Or is there some tradeoff between dpi and number of colors? 2) I have an A3000 with 2 meg chip and 4 meg fast, so there's room for another 12 meg fast memory on the motherboard. How much memory does a full-page 24-bit scan require? 3) What is in that ASDG driver package? 4) Migraph OCR will only scan directly from its own (or the Golden Image) scanner. Has anyone worked on ways to make other scanners emulate the Migraph scanner? 5) On the cheaper side, the Sharp JX-100 (advertised for about $300) claims to do 18-bit color at 200 dpi. How big is it (page size)? 6) On the more expensive side, what is the next step up from the Epson scanner? 7) Are there any programs that edit (paint) 24-bit RGB pictures without a real 24-bit display? (besides DCTV Paint; it won't actually make and save all 24-bit RGB colors; and it's limited to NTSC video frame size (736 x 482)).
