Jonathan, Tape is also important in th HI-8 format. Currently, there are two types. Evaporated metal is generally considered to have better image quality, but doesn't stand up to repeated use (ie: single-framing). It evidently sheds its particles with more use. Metal particle tape has a sturdier backing and a stronger bond so it stands up better to the rigors of editing, but its image quality suffers (still better than VHS & 3/4). There are still complaints that in an editing environment the tape stretches and causes sync and lock problems. -Steve
