Hi Chris,
Sorry, I'm jumping in late for this one, but I'm experiencing the same problems
at the moment.
I had a 25MB DXF-File with 2 Layers more than 64K Faces, and had a lot of
trouble with it.
I noticed, that I got different translations with different methods.
I started with converting the whole file – what, of course, failed after 6
hours converting : "not enough ram ". I upgraded memory (got enough in my
company<g>) – same result.
After crying for help, Gary (Yost) told me, this message is due to the 64K Face
restriction…..
Ok, I splitted the whole damned thing to multiple wblocks, converted them to
dxf – and got a relatively
good copy of my objects, of course some were missing (even though they were
made out of 3d-Faces…)
<AAARGH!> first time to get tempted to throw everything from my balcony !
Then one nice guy sent me a lsp-file to convert every single layer to a single
dxf-file. (uploaded it to utilities)
– Did it, converted 40 files to 3ds, merged it. Got another fine model with
different elements missing. (PLEASE, don't ask me why).
Next thing I'll do is deleting the two big layers (unnessecary plants) and
shoot it through the dxfto3ds utility that's on this forum.
Then I'll start to combine all parts into a heck of a mesh………
You see it's a tedious work – From now on I tell all my clients to do the
following:
– Split layers up if there are more than 64000 Faces on it.
– Put only parts with the same material on one layer (speeds up mat-assigning)
– If there are 2D Polylines that need to be lofted (had this with a swimming
pool now) put them on separate layers
If they don't agree to this – I multiply my fee with two (AND TELL this to MY
CLIENT)
– else, nobody's gonna pay for my wasted time.
I don't know if this helps, but for me it's good to know that I'm not alone
with those problems.
Bye and good luck
Michael
