You can use them, but they don't print sharper than normal fonts. When you said they didn't word, did you mean in that sense (the printing) or that they didn't show up or select from the font requester? Versions prior to the current version (3.0) had problems using them in any form. Some fonts only show up if you are in bold or italics prior to going to the font requester.
