Well, within the price range, yes – within the same price/performance class, no way. The 3000 is seriously slot-poor compared to the 2000. My 2500/030 is configured such that a 3000 can't match it, for instance – network, multiple serial ports, BCD single frame controller, IV24 display board, 36 megs of fast mem, 2 megs of chip, SCSI. Plus there is the Toaster issue for vidiots – plus there is the PC card issue for Messy types. There's another thing, too – with the 4000 available, I wouldn't recommend a 3000 to anyone right now – although the price looks tempting at about 1/2, it's far _less_ than "half the machine". 030 instead of 040, 4k color palette instead of 16 million, 4k colors instead of 256k colors, low density drive instead of high-density drive, fewer drive bays (although I give the 3000 a LOT of points for SCSI!), less sophisticated video slot (neither can "Toast", of course). No, I think the 3000 has lost a valid place in the lineup. Marketing can synthesize one, of course, but when you go feature for feature, it feels like a bad deal to me. –Ben …via AutoPilot
