It is the former. There are a lot of Franco-American names here in
Maine, stemming from immigrant labor staffing mills in the 18 hundreds, but
they are mostly anglicised now. A drug chain here called 'Laverdiere's" is
pronounced 'La ver de err's'. Go figure….
