Phil, Two things; if the person has upgraded their R2 to R3, the license is still in their name; you couldn't do anything "legal" with the old R2. Second, and of more significance, the upgrade to 3 from 2 doesn't come with a new hardware lock; you have to use the one that came with R2, so even if you got the R2 disks and manuals, you can't run it without the hardware lock, which would now be on your friend's R3. There might be an alternative, in that Adesk recently announced that 3DS R2 will be sold at certain educational institutions for $395; get in touch with Autodesk for the number of a local Area Educational Representative for more info.
