OS/2 vs. Win NT
I agree, 3DSR4 will probably be for NT, and I hope it supports OpenGL and that
there will be binaries for R4400, Alpha, PPC, etc. But that is the future.
For the meantime, I'll take 3DSR3 running under OS/2 on an Intel CPU. OS/2 SMP
will be out soon, and since you can run multiple render slaves under OS/2, you
could have a multiprocessor machine serving as a single machine mini render
farm, with a CPU for each process. NT could do this now, if only it could run
3DS at all.
I'm also wondering how NT will react to a dos app like 3DS that insists on
doing graphics output even when running in slave or batch mode and how it will
deal with a dos app like 3DS that uses the enhanced mode of the graphics chip
(S3, ATI, Weitek P9K, etc.). I don't think Microsoft has made NT as robust as
OS/2 with respect to graphical dos apps.
