Doug,
As a programmer I agree use the best OS available. I would go
with IRIX. X windows with motif along with open GL and Inventor are
very hard to beat. The "marketing guys" would never base a product on
the need to switch peoples operating system. A large public company
makes software choices based on marketing. This is "real" life.
It would be almost impossible to start up a major software
package with the requirement of switching peoples OS. Not to mention
the support nightmare.
I agree 3DS owns the machine which why 386 extended DOS can not
be beat. It makes 3DS run with operating system authority. If you
are running a machine with a dedicated task you don't need Windows NT
or OS/2.
