Paul, I don't have the definitive explanation as to why you must use 8-N-1 and not 7-N-1 or 7-E-1. The gibberish you see will go away, just continue the login sequence with the correct responses. The system will adjust and by the time the Password: prompt appears it will be legible. Binary downloads require 8-N-1. ASCII needs the 8th bit to be stripped. Some term programs can do this by setting a feature of the program ON. Look in all the menu options for setting up your particular program. Somewhere there may be a selection to "strip the 8th bit". Other programs like Backtalk do it automatically it seems. A version of Procomm I use at work on a clone doesn't strip it. I see gibberish each time I log on with it but that doesn't stop me from using it. That particular program has a auto-script writing feature that I turned on during one such gibberish logon. Now I use the script each time and it responds to the gibberish prompts with its own gibberish that the system accepts. Once it reaches the password that prompt is readable, I manually type it in and from then on all is fine. Look in Lib 5 of this forum for the xprbplus.library.
