I have just discovered that this (non smoothing of certain handfuls of faces) occurs only with faces which I built using the create/face/build command. Realizing that this relationship exists does not solve the problem for me, but maybe it's enough of a clue to give you some ideas? Also, I should be more exact when I say the faces "aren't smoothing"; more accurately, I get what seems to be smoothing (a gradient anyway) across the surface of the faces, but no smoothing occurs along edges shared with lofted and/or lofted and subsequently altered faces.
