Your scenario is indicative of my experience as well. I had the opportunity to work on the Times Square project with Philip Johnson. His sentiment upon seeing the 3D work I was generating for use in design was that he found it extremely useful to make design decisions but would never show it to a client as it would give the client the impression that the design was complete. He also wanted the "soft and fuzzy" ambiguous look of a hand rendering. With a hand rendering you have to fill in the blanks with your own ideas. This makes the client complete the picture in his own way, a favorable way. However, with some new effects with Fractal's Painter and other digital tools I bet I could sway the old man. I had a recent client desire a hand rendering instead of a computer rendering even though he wanted an animation as well. Talk about strange requirements and desires. The finished product which this client specifically required was an animation of his new space with still shots of the hand renderings interspersed. Yes, that meant scanning the hand renderings as this client wanted everything on the laptop. He didn't want to hear about the artistic effects I could get with Painter. He paid double and was happy.
