You and I have had a similar discussion on this topic. The most unfortunate
part of this process for me is that the perception by most of the designers I
work with is that using 3DS is too slow. I should say 'using 3D' is too slow.
Most are content to sketch in 3D, draw in 2D and keep on moving. With the fees
being squeezed to nothing the design phases get shortened and investigation of
lighting, space, volume, proportion, material and acoustics get streamlined and
IMO oversimplified.

But, being able to explore the design, walk within it, try lighting
solutions and examine materials in scale & combined in correct
proportions (something sample boards fail miserably at) with the
ability to try different solutions at will and you have what 3DS
really is – a 3D tool for design.

This is the way it should be but I fear isn't the reality for much of our
profession.
