And the architectural profession, week as it is, is all too willing to give
away the CAD .DWGs without a fight or request for additional service fees –
possibly fofeiting future work and services since _their_ documents are now
open to be accessed by any developer/contractor/unscrupulous architect.

This is a topic that I have been trying to bring out in the open at my
firm. Like you, I see the potential disasters which loom on the
horizon as CADD files are zinged around the planet. The design is
owned by the architect, the drawings are owned by the architect, ONLY
the building is owned by the client. IMHO, if an owner requests CADD
files, the owner should be asked to PAY BIG, BIG, money for these
files. Often contracts do not include any stipulation for
distribution of electronic documents. This is a huge problem. Owners
believe that they have a right to the files, this isn't necessarily
so. I have never seen an owner's request turned down on this
subject. We architects are shooting ourselves in the foot.
In 3D the problem is just starting to emerge. For anyone who cares
DON'T GIVE AWAY YOUR FILES !!!!
