#3D modeling
Both 3DS and Truespace are good programs. I use 3DS every day
and like it a lot. It has fantastic speed and versatility. Truespace
has a great interface but is a little too thin in the feature
department to be used for serious work. As Greg mentioned Imagine is
also good. It offers good features and an excellent modeler, but IMO
has a clunky interface. You might want to try out Imagine LT for 99
bucks and see what you think. If you are really patient check out
Real 3D. It has an unbelievably long list of features and an equal
unbelievably poor interface. If you aren't buying right away I'd
suggest waiting for Lightwave. Version 4 will be available on PC's
and SGI's before the years end. IMHO it is superior to any of the
aformentioned programs. It is very well setup, rich in features, and
has awesome output quality (it's used in Babylon 5, Robocop, and
Seaquest DSV). I feel it edges 3DS out especially considering it is
a quarter of the price (street price should be around $600).
What do you plan on using 3D for? Your answer greatly influences
which program is best suited for you. If you have a limited budget
and can't wait get Imagine or possibly Truespace. How much
horsepower do you have? 3DS is unbelievably fast but won't
raytrace. I always use it for "quick and dirty" projects. If you
have rendering power to spare I think Lightwave is your best choice.
You can create just about anything using it. Both Lightwave and 3DS
provide the tools necessary to earn a great deal of money and won't
hamper your creativity. If you are really serious about 3D work and
have the necessary talent any of these programs would make an
excellent investment. Talk to people who have used the programs a
great deal and get their opinion. If you have any specific questions
