I agree completely about innovation being the key. I also think that
"artistic merit" has its place in demos too, even when the techniques aren't
the most leading-edge possible.
That's why I felt bad for the coders of "Cosmic", one of the ASM'94
demos I downloaded. Evidently they were laughed at during the
convention, judging from some of the comments they made in their
credits section. This was due to the fact that their source material
was videotape (this is obvious when you watch it). But still, they
made the player, encode and decode the pixels, store all the images
in the code, and do some sort of on-playback sharpening algorithm
(you can see the image processing artifacts, which gives it a cool
"computery" look).
It had no polygon engines, no spinning pictures or "slimy" mutations. So
what? I thought it was really cool, and I think it's the height of snobbery to
call this "lame". Oh well, what do I know?
