>I read somewhere, a programmer on the development team went off on his own to add protected mode to Windows. It wasn't even an officially sanctioned project. I once had the chance to work with an older techie that had been at Bell Labs during the 60's, and when they invented the transistor… whew the stories! Anyways, it was interesting the way he spoke of hiring into their top engineering facility.. They signed him on for 2 years to start, introduced him to people in the lab related to his skills and said 'Go work on what you want to'. It was up to him to find his place.
