It's not a total solution, and only works when you're in a view where the
object is out of the view area. But you can re-center the currently selected
object by pressing R-alt+z. It's not a total solution, and it doesn't zoom out
to show the entire object. I'm just mentioning it in case it got by you.
A command such as the one you mentioned would be nice to have as a user gadget.
