I had similar problems importing DXF files from Autocad a while back.
If scale of the scene gets to large you will get a roundoff error,
this will flatten curves or create jaggies as you described. 3D
Studio works on a single-precision floating-point and will max out at
around 700,000 units in the X,Y or Z axis.
