DXF is ….. we do it all the time without any problems. If you're
going to go any other way then you need to find a good intermediate
format.
Acuris has been developing a set of translators for the SGI machine to
exchange models between formats. It appears that they used open-model
to write the translator, so models from 3, 5, and 6 should work fine.
We regularly move extremely complex geometry between 3DS and Alias
and the standard DXF out from 3DS works well.
