With InterChange, you'd convert directly between .3DS files and Alias
"polysets," a quad- and triangle-based format that does carry some
color info as well as sub-objects and hierarchy. We're close to
release on the Windows version of InterChange. By now, I'm sure
you're on our mailing list, and we'll be doing a big mailing as soon
as InterChange for Windows is shipping.
