John,
Make copies of the new workbench disk and copy the files from your old
wb disk that are program files, not the files inside the directories. You can
delete the demos directory if you wish and printer drivers that you don't need
(obviously do this on a COPY ONLY!) to make room.
If you have a disk full of just executable files, don't worry, it will
run as is under 1.2 although for faster disk access, you might want to copy the
files to a new disk after formating it under 1.2.
Among other things, 1.2 is much faster in disk access due to the way
the files are now laid out. To see how much faster, just open the 1.2 disk on
the workbench and see how fast those icons pop up there. Now, turn you Amiga
off and do the same thing with an old 1.1 and see how long it takes for the
icons to pop up.
Also, there are several new programs, lots of bug fixes, a bug fixed
version of AmigaBASIC, the ability to use a 5 1/4" drive under AmigaDOS, the
PCUtilities, the Font Editor, a copy of MicroEMACS, a visual memory map, new
requestors for some stuff, new commands, etc. Read the manual, you find lots
of goodies.
