Stated simply, chroma-keying is electronically "selecting" one color (narrow
range of colors, actually), making that color "transparent", then placing the
resulting image "over" another video signal. For example, a newsman sits
before a large panel painted, say, blue. By chroma-keying, that blue panel
goes "transparent", and news story footage from another source "shows through"
the "window", such that you apparently see the footage over the anchor's
shoulder.
I'm explaining this poorly, I fear — Joanne could do much better — but you
get the idea, perhaps.
