I'd give you the same advice I gave a guy in my office, who bought a '286 clone about two months ago. He's picking up his used 1000 today. Keep in mind that there is loads of add-on hardware for the 1000, but nothing specifically for the 500 yet. Architecturally, the machines are nearly identical, but the 500's expansion slot is on the "wrong" side. As an MSDOS machine user, you're probably comfortable with a separate keyboard, which you won't have with a 500. Either way, unless you've got a fairly versatile monitor already (e. g. NEC Multisync or Sony Multiscan), you're going to have to plop down about another $500 for a monitor (maybe a little less for a genuine C/A monitor). Go for it. Regards, D.J. Bauch
