640×400 with 2 bit planes (4 colors, like the workbench) would require the
_same_ memory bandwidth as 640×400 with 4 bitplanes, interlaced. Not more than
the Amiga has at all. Now, 4 bit planes, at 640×400 and so on, would wring out
the sponge, so to speak, but you could certainly have a mode like that. It's
very similar to the curretn situation where you can only have 4 bitplanes of
640 pixel stuff… you can have 6, if you'll accept 320 horizontal. One rather
unfortunate "feature" of using memory in this manner is that the bit-screen
mapping could get a little strange without a line buffer in there somewhere…
